From the time I was a toddler and my mom would let me wear one of her slips as a gown and put a necklace on my head like a tiara, I have loved ‘creating looks’.
I took a theatre course one summer where we got to do some prosthetic makeup, and that only got me more hooked on the thought of using my hair and skin as a constantly evolving canvas. (I could paint a pretty realistic third degree burn on some liquid latex, if I do say so myself)
And in the last few years, my sister, my husband and I have started doing some lowkey cosplaying at comic cons, mostly in the hope of getting my dad to join in on the fun. (No luck yet, but we are in this for the long haul!)
So this will be a place where I can show creative looks I have dreamed up, talk about beauty, skincare, and hair care that I adore (maybe even some I don’t) and share how working with cosmetics as my artistic medium helps me cope with everyday stresses and my anxiety.
I graduated from college in 2008, with a degree in Women’s Studies so everything I do is viewed from a lens of beauty, of anxiety, and of feminism. (That’s a fancy mix, huh?)
So the only disclaimer I will offer is this: We are all beautiful exactly the way we are. Sometimes we choose to perform gender; other times… maybe we don’t. And either way is the right way. Like the great Rupaul says, “We’re all born naked and the rest is drag”. Cosmetics can be a hobby, an art form, or sometimes just something that makes you feel good. (And I promise you, liking this stuff doesn’t make you any less of a warrior.)
I live with my sweet husband and our pup, daisydog… and I really have a beautiful life.
